If their insane volume doesn't pulverize you into a fetal position and migraine headache, then their back-lighting and epilepsy-inducing psychedelic strobes make photography even trickier. The general idea here was to "push" the film and open the shutter, handheld, for long exposures, sometimes several seconds, crossing fingers that a random strobe light exposes a band member, as when shooting lightning strikes. The following images were shot from a pair of Loveless tour dates in Toronto in March and June of 1992. Red-letter days of my life. (My recollection is that "You Made Me Realize" from the earlier March show at the Opera House clocked in at the longest of the tour, which will mean something to somebody.) Several of these images were published in different compositions sixteen years ago, and some should appear in Eric Green's documentary film Beautiful Noise (Hypnagogia Films), scheduled for release later this year. MBV fans have been politely pestering me to print these images for the past decade, but only now, after prompting from Kat at Pure Groove, have I finally relented and fine-printed for exhibition. I'm glad that she did, because re-visiting these negatives after not even thinking about them for many years, has brought back a lot of terrific (o-kay, nostalgiac) memories.
