"May 5th and 6th, 1745 [OS] -- Got some of the Great Artillery on Shoar -- and began to transport them -- which was attended with incredible Difficulty there being no possibility of drawing them with Horses or oxen if we had had never so many -- and the Distance near -- over rocky Hills -- or thro low marshy Grounds where the Cannon were oftentimes almost buried and the Men that hawl'd them, up to their knees in Mire and all to be done in the Nights, which were exceding cold foggy and rainy. -- The Enemy did not seem to apprehend the possibility of our transporting Battery Cannon over those Grounds but our men seemd resolvd to surmount all Difficulties -- and thro no dry Cloaths nor warm Shelter to sleep in after their Fatigue there were no signs of Discouragement or Discontent -- and in five days time, besides a great Variety of other necessary Services they got 8-22 lb Cannon and some smaller ones to the Battery where the Mortars were placed and mounted them in a fascine Battery there."
