Section of the "Lighthouse Trail" avoids the dangerous cliffs near East Lorraine Head and goes inland, through a narrow, winding claustophobic path. The trail was used heavily for foot traffic between Louisbourg and Laurembec (Lorembec/Big Lorraine) in the 18th century, and was preferred by the locals over the official Louisbourg-Baleine road. The title here is a shorthand cheat from my field notes: In 1756 a French engineer named Pontleroy made the trip to scout anchorages and locate defensive weaknesses, later agreeing with the locals assessing the path was indeed in better condition than the actual road. |
